Rapplier was an essayist who, according to Nickels, was called, the dean of American essayists, a shy, Catholic version of Ralph Waldo Emerson and the American Jane Austen. She was a lifelong resident of Philadelphia. Nickels also said that his book was dedicated to Rapplier. The account of George Lippard was one of the most interesting of the evening. In Nickels telling, Lippard was a friend of Edgar Allan Poe, lived for a time on the street, and flourished into a socially conscious writer and flamboyant character. Nickels said that Lippard was know to wear colorful capes over his daggers, pistol and sword-shaped cane. Benjamin Franklin stands as a notable absence from Nickels collection.
